Grade Levels
Fostering an Enthusiasm for Learning
The Kindergarten and primary years at Shaker Road School formally begin students’ academic lives. After successful years of early learning work in Pre-Kindergarten, students are now ready for more traditional academic studies. While all subject areas are taught in the Kindergarten and Primary Program, the core emphasis is on literacy and mathematical competence. Between Kindergarten and second grade, students work to acquire crucial skills necessary for success in all academic disciplines. By the end of second grade, students’ reading, writing, and math skills are strong enough for them to branch out and successfully take on the challenges of third grade.
Other academic areas include social studies, science, Spanish, technology, art, and music. The physical fitness program begins formally in Kindergarten. Students participate in soccer in the fall, skiing and skating in the winter, and lacrosse in the spring.
